Paris, 6 July 2017
On 29 June 2017, while Sherpa, the SCRC and Ibuka France brought a suit against BNP Paribas for complicity in genocide, in war crimes and in crimes against humanity, these NGOS joined SumOfUs in launching an international petition (available in French, English and German) calling for financial institutions to be held responsible for their involvement in human rights violations.
In only one week, SumOfUs and the aforementioned organizations have collected over 149 000 signatures for this petition addressed to the Macron government and the new Members of the French National Assembly.
If the alleged events did in fact take place, this complaint would help bring to light the responsability of investors in war crimes, and more generally in human rights violations.
At the start of a new term, we have an excellent way to obtain an increase in the liability of banks, so that nobody can doubt how their savings are being used. The statute on the duty of care of multinational corporations, voted on 21 February 2017, and which applies to banks, should from now on prevent the involvement of financial institutions in such violations.
