Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPP) are designed to silence journalists, whistleblowers and civil society organisations. Initiated by companies, institutions or public figures, the aim of these proceedings is not to win a legal victory, but rather to financially drain the targets and intimidate them.
In October 2024, the Coalition Against SLAPPs in Europe (CASE) released the Anti-SLAPP Guidebook, aimed at helping public watchdogs and advocates defend against abusive lawsuits and legal threats. The guide provides practical advice on reducing vulnerability to SLAPPs, positioning effective defenses, and identifying where to seek assistance when facing legal threats or litigation.
CASE is a coalition of more than 30 organisations calling on European institutions to take action against SLAPPs. The coalition has actively followed the elaboration of the recently adopted anti-SLAPP directive. CASE also seeks to strengthen the resilience of victims of SLAPP suits through the provision of legal and other resources. Sherpa is a member of CASE since its creation and drafted part of the Guidebook.
